Der Versuch zu bleiben. Dammbau und Krise im sudanesischen Niltal

Dr. Valerie Hänsch

Research Area:

The Manasir, farmers on the Nile in Northern Sudan, have to resettle due to flooding after construction of a high dam on the fourth cataract of the Nile. The mega development project is intended to reinforce Sudan’s industrialisation process and future development through generating electricity.

I follow the resettlement process of the Manasir to their new settlement sites under the perspective of place disruption/place making. My research interest is focused on local practices which create a sense of continuity among the Manasir and on how people transform their new homes into places of reliability and certainty through routinization.

My theoretical frame is mainly informed by resettlement studies.
