The Academic Committee admits the doctoral students, verifies annually the progress of every student, appoints the doctoral commissions for the defence and takes the final decisions regarding organisation of the Graduate School, staff, allocation of finances, and the coordination of the training programme.

The Academic Committee acts in consultation with the Advisory Board, which includes two external advisors, one representative of the University of Bayreuth, and one representative of Institut of African Studies (IAS). The recommendations of the Advisory Board on any decision and question are documented in the annual BIGSAS  reports.

The Academic Committee is supported by the four Research Area Committees (RAC). These committees include the Principal Investigators responsible for the given research area, i.e. between five and nine persons, a representative of the doctoral students and a representative of the postdocs. The committees are responsible for making proposals regarding the organisation of the training programme, for the monitoring of the students every semester, for delivering an annual report to the Academic Committee on the research progress of every student; for nominating the personal supervisors, for the organisation of the doctoral commission for the defence and related questions.

The RACs are supported in making proposals on the training programme by the Work Groups (WG), to which, beside the students belong postdocs and PIs who contribute actively to the topic of the WG.

The execution of the decisions of the Academic Committee is carried out by the Management Board to which the Dean, the Vice Dean and the Manager of BIGSAS belong.
