Programme Structure

PhD / PostDoc Programme Structure

1) If support concerning language competences is necessary, doctoral students will be enrolled into a preparatory period. In cooperation with the Bayreuth Institute for International Communication (IIK Bayreuth), German language courses and courses imparting key intercultural qualifications are offered. In addition to the close interaction with the supervisor and mentors, courses dealing with German academic organisation, methodology and theory are essential components of this period.

2) The regular time-to-degree is three years, which are structured according to the Individual Research Training Plan (IRTP) and depending on the respective topic two periods of field research can be incorporated. In order to exchange thoughts and ideas on a local and an international level, students have to participate in a work group, a summer school and a conference during the course of the programme. Moreover one publication has to be generated during this time. To make sure that the doctoral student is making progress, an IRTP Progress Report has to be handed in each term. This procedure ensures a time-to-degree of three years.

3) Subsequent to the doctoral programme, the student can pursue an academic or a non-academic career. The knowledge and qualifications gained during the course of the doctoral programme allow for both options.
