This course introduces major areas of sociolinguistic research in and on Africa. Students will be provided with the necessary tools to explain sociolinguistic phenomena in this world region at an advanced level. After having acquired knowledge about concepts and methodological approaches to research in the complex relationship between languages and societies in Africa, students will be encouraged to apply theories and methods independently, showing their individual judgement of a given topic from the academic field and area of investigation.
