External Workshops for Young Researchers

BIGSAS and the Cluster are offering two workshops for young researchers in the summer break. The workshops are intended to support Junior Fellows and Postdocs in developing non-academic skills.

Proposal Writing, 26-27 July 2021 (online)

Writing a successful research proposal requires strong research skills, content knowledge, writing proficiency, and organizational ability. The workshop provides postdoctoral candidates and (if places are available) doctoral students with the background, skills, and key steps necessary to develop a competitive funding proposal.

Developing a strong research idea and considering funding resources is as important as understanding the elements of a proposal package. By writing and reviewing typical grant components, participants learn how to outline a grant proposal from start to finish.

Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, universities and research institutions are still operating under restrictions. Therefore, the workshop on Proposal Writing will be an online course including a modular, blended-learning structure of:

  • Video-conferences (Zoom)
  • Self-study videos (Vimeo)
  • Exercises and paperwork (alone or with partner/peers in breakout rooms in Zoom)
  • References, samples, and guidelines (Dropbox)

Media Training for Young Researchers, 27-28 September 2021 (in presence)

What are reporters interested in? How can I communicate clearly – and be easily understood? How should I present my core messages in an interview? This hands-on workshop prepares researchers for meeting the media.

Participants will start by writing a text about their research for a broader audience. They practice interviews and statements in front of a microphone and a camera. And they receive structured feedback on line of reasoning, understandability, as well as way of speaking and body language. Basic media law is also part of the workshop.
